(My Letter to the Editor, Daily Press, 11-08-24)
I don’t believe Kamala lost because she is a woman or person of color as I heard from one commentator this morning. As John Carville once said years ago, “It’s the economy, stupid”.
But America’s economy is strong. We are the envy of European countries, jobs are being created, our GDP is high, we are producing more oil than ever, wages are going up, and almost daily the stock market reaches a new high! But unfortunately, Biden nor Harris did not exclaim this enough.
High food prices were caused by the pandemic, absenteeism at factories and warehouses, and problems in the distribution chain among other issues. If corporations were indeed altruistic, prices would have come down once we came out of the hardships of COVID-19. But corporate greed entered the mix and did not leave.
As for home sales, low inventory during the pandemic caused home prices to sky rocketed. Sellers got greedy as they accepted offers tens of thousands over the market price setting a much higher baseline for newly listed properties. They made exuberant profits at the expense of the next homebuyers and inflated the market.
Included in this mix is developers multi buying single-family homes, renting them at high rents and robbing the goal of “homeownership” for first time homebuyers.
And along with this greed, people have given up integrity, humility and principle for cheaper eggs, bacon and other groceries which Trump will never be able to bring back to 2020 prices, along with home prices. Congratulations to Trump and Vance.
